Bring a Friend to Fitness with a Heart Rate Monitor
By Coach and Trainer Dr. Alinda Perrine – ZoneX™ sensible heart rate training:
The holiday season is a time to give as well as a time to reflect on what’s important in life. What could be more important than a friend’s health? This holiday, bring a friend to fitness and make fitness a part of their life. Figure out what’s important to them, what do they like to do? Be a workout buddy and make a commitment to workout with them a couple of days a week. Or, give them an hour or two with a coach or personal trainer. Buy them a heart rate monitor and send them to a seminar. Gym memberships are always a great purchase to get your favorite person exercising.
Here’s an example of how one friend helped another find a great fitness routine. Recently, a woman, Mary Jo, attended one of the cycling classes that I teach. Previously, Mary Jo had attended a cycling class at another gym, but she didn’t particularly like the indoor cycling class. But her friend, Tammy, talked her into giving a second class a second chance.
Upon entering the class, I asked Mary Jo if she had a heart rate monitor. She said “No” and that she had never used a heart rate monitor. I immediately offered her a monitor, showed her how to wear it, and told her that I would help her assess her workout at the end of class. Wow! She loved the class. She was completely intrigued with the changes in her heart rate as she changed cadences and resistance. Focusing on heart rate made the class fly by. Mary Jo completely realized the value of the experience. Her heart rate data helped her see the benefit of the workout. She found the heart rate monitor was giving her direction and proof of the results. As a result, Mary Jo is trading in her treadmill workout for the cycling class. She made a commitment to attend cycle class a couple of days a week. This is true dedication because Mary Jo is a busy medical student at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and doesn’t have much time to workout.
Thanks to her friend, Tammy, Mary Jo now has a workout that she feels good about. That’s a gift!

Dr. Alinda, I am 47 and my heart rate is usually higher than charts after exercising for about 30 min. My comfort HR is about 153-155. After about 45 minutes it shoots to 160 and continues a gradual upward topping at about 168 when I run 5 or more miles
