Do I need a heart rate monitor every day I train?
Yes, for three reasons:
1. Heart rate data is meaningful and measurable information. Your heart rate monitor measures the intensity of your exercise, whether it is high, low or moderate. Your body changes and responds to varying intensity. To maximize your training, designate a level of intensity each day. Observing your heart rate during your workout is a quick and accurate way to measure your intensity and give meaning to your workout.
2. Heart rate monitors tell the truth. As a coach, I often hear “I know my heart rate even when I’m not wearing my monitor.” This is simply not true. The only way you know your heart rate is to observe it.
3. Heart rate data keeps you motivated. Most athletes, “gym rats,” exercisers, and instructors cycle through periods of high and low motivation. This is normal. You cannot and should not expect to be at peak all the time. A heart rate monitor is a fitness tool that can motivate you to “stay on track,” and affirm whether you are at peak fitness or tapering off.
