I am 50 and when I exercise on treadmill or eliptical, I usually cross my target heart rate which is 168 and sometimes for a very long period of time.
The following comments may help you sort through facets of your question. I would need more data related to how you determined your max heart rate and how you set your target heart rate for an in-depth answer.
- Sleep is very necessary for the body to repair itself and get stronger. For most people, 7-8 hours of sleep is a healthy amount of sleep.
- Your age and/or gender may have a contributing factor to a change in sleep habits.
- Age related maximum heart rate is not an accurate measure of your maximum heart rate.
- If you are exercising close to bedtime, a higher intensity exercise may produce more endorphins; thus arousing the body closer to the time the body needs to relax.
Try an experiment, change the time of day you are exercising and evaluate sleep. Change intensity of exercise on certain days and exercise below 168 bpm. Does this affect sleep? Keep a journal and log your heart rate, time of exercise, your amount of sleep, and any findings you notice.
Good luck and sweet dreams.

Dr. Alinda, I am 47 and my heart rate is usually higher than charts after exercising for about 30 min. My comfort HR is about 153-155. After about 45 minutes it shoots to 160 and continues a gradual upward topping at about 168 when I run 5 or more miles
